Quinta do Lago and the Ria Formosa on the approach to Faro, Algarve

Golf Trips to Portugal

The Algarve is the UK golf society's default answer, and it has earned it.

GolfTrip Destinations Portugal Golf Trips

Two and a half hours from most UK airports, a twenty-minute transfer from Faro to the first tee, and enough good golf within a half-hour radius that nobody needs to get back in a minibus for two hours a day. That combination is why the Algarve has hosted more British society trips than anywhere else in Europe, and why groups who go once tend to go back.

The golf runs from genuinely world-class parkland at Quinta do Lago and Monte Rei down to honest, well-conditioned resort courses in the west that cost half as much and won't destroy a 22-handicapper's card. Beyond the Algarve there's the Lisbon coast — Praia D'El Rey and the Oitavos/Penha Longa cluster — and a quieter, cheaper scene around Porto, both worth a look if your group has done the Algarve twice already.

The Courses Worth Building a Trip Around

Quinta do Lago

Quinta do Lago South

The one everyone wants on the itinerary. Immaculate, generous off the tee and hung above the Ria Formosa nature reserve. Book months ahead for peak-season prime times.

Green fee: From around €178

Quinta do Lago

Quinta do Lago North

The South's slightly cheaper, slightly friendlier sibling. Beau Welling redesign, still resort-perfect conditioning, and easier on a mixed-handicap society.

Green fee: From around €163

Quinta do Lago

San Lorenzo

Regularly ranked the best course in Portugal. Semi-private, so access usually comes via the Dona Filipa or a package — worth the arranging.

Green fee: Around €138

Eastern Algarve

Monte Rei North

Nicklaus Signature design and arguably the finest conditioning in the country. Buggy included, quieter tee sheet, an hour east of Faro.

Green fee: €175–€190

Vilamoura

Victoria, Vilamoura

The old Portugal Masters venue. Long, open and dramatic, right in the middle of the biggest concentration of hotels and bars in the Algarve.

Green fee: €136 low to around €195 peak

Vale do Lobo

Vale do Lobo Royal

You are here for the 16th — a par 3 across two clifftops with the Atlantic underneath. Buggies are compulsory for early tee times.

Green fee: €136 / €170 / €203 by season

Lagos

Palmares

Links-influenced, sea views from almost everywhere, and materially cheaper than the central-Algarve marquee names. The value pick of the west.

Green fee: From around €120

Also worth naming on an itinerary: Vilamoura Old Course, Amendoeira (Faldo and O'Connor Jnr layouts), Pine Cliffs and Espiche. We haven't quoted fees for those because their published rates move too often to state confidently — check direct before you commit.

On the prices: these are indicative 2026 visitor rates gathered from course and operator listings, shown to help you budget. Green fees change with season, day of the week and where you're staying — always confirm direct with the course before you commit a group to it.

When to Go

MonthsTypical daytimeWhat to expect
March–May20–25°CThe sweet spot. Comfortable walking temperatures, courses coming out of winter in good shape, and green fees below peak.
June–September28–30°CReliable sun, highest prices, busiest tee sheets. July and August are genuinely hot for 18 holes on foot — take an early time or a buggy.
October–November20–25°CThe other sweet spot, and the one experienced societies pick. Same sunshine as September, noticeably lower rates, emptier fairways.
December–FebruaryUp to about 18°CCheapest of the year and still very playable — this is when a lot of UK clubs run their winter escape. Shorter days, occasional rain.

The Bases Groups Actually Use

Vilamoura

The default. More courses, hotels and restaurants within ten minutes than anywhere else in the Algarve, and every budget tier represented. If your group can't agree, come here.

Quinta do Lago & Vale do Lobo

Upmarket, quiet, expensive, and you can walk to some of the best golf in Europe. Better for a smaller group happy to eat on the resort.

Lagos, Praia da Luz & Carvoeiro

Western Algarve. Cheaper, prettier, more of a town feel, with Palmares and Espiche nearby. Slightly longer transfer from Faro.

Tavira & the east

For a Monte Rei trip. Undeveloped by Algarve standards, genuinely Portuguese, and very quiet in shoulder season.

What It Costs Per Person

TierPer personWhat that buys
Budget£700–£950Flights with hand luggage plus clubs, self-catering or a 3-star, and three rounds on western-Algarve and resort courses in the €100–€130 bracket.
Mid-range£1,100–£1,450A 4-star in Vilamoura, one marquee round plus two strong seconds in the €150–€180 bracket, hire car or transfers included.
Luxury£1,800–£2,500+Vale do Lobo, Quinta do Lago or Monte Rei on the accommodation, three rounds on the headline courses, private transfers.

Indicative planning ranges built from current green fees and typical accommodation rates — not quotes. Exchange rates, season and how far ahead you book will all move these. Use them to set expectations with the group, then price the real thing.
